History of the Company

The company was founded and is owned by Jeremy Unsworth. Jeremy has worked in the funeral industry since leaving school at 16. He had always wanted to be a funeral director from the age of 13 and when he left school he acquired a position at R. T. Leach and Sons Funeral Directors. Whilst there he studied to qualify for the National Association of Funeral Directors Diploma and was the third youngest ever to hold the diploma. At 19 he was promoted to run a new business they acquired and continued to do this for two years.

In 1987, Jeremy decided to open his own funeral service and purchased the premises at New Mills at the age of 21, and has been there ever since. As the business grew he had to take on more full time staff and so his brother, Chris, came in as a Funeral Director and his sister, Lindsay, became Office Manager.

Whaley Bridge

In 1998, Jeremy was approached by the owner of Williamsons Funeral Services, Whaley Bridge, to purchase the business as the owner wished to retire and so Unsworth’s Funeral Service expanded.

The company has expanded steadily over the last twenty years whilst still remaining a family concern with family values. Many of the staff, both full time and part time have been with the company for over 25 years. In 2004, due to problems getting monumental masonry work completed in a reasonable time scale, Jeremy decided to open his own monumental masons, Unsworths Memorials.

Unsworths Memorials

This side of the business is managed by his son, Jake, and now completes all monumental work for Unsworths Funeral Service and other local companies. Unsworths Memorials has two members of staff, Steve Hibbert who cuts all the inscriptions and Denis Brown who fits the stones.

Bollington

In 2013, Jeremy decided to expand into Cheshire and a branch was opened in Bollington. As the workload grew, Jeremy’s other son, Josh, came to work fulltime in the company.

Family and local ties have always been the basis of Unsworths Funeral Services and all the staff strive to maintain a high level of professionalism and provided a dignified and personal service.
